In addition to acting as a liaison between the student body and the administration, serving on the Honor Board is the primary role of a member of Prefect Council. A few years following the merger, students grew concerned with the fact that when a student had committed an infraction which violated the school’s Honor Code, the administration handed out consequences without any student input. Thus, due to this reaction, the creation of the Honor Board was put to a vote and was passed with an overwhelming majority.
The Honor Board handles all infractions of the school’s Honor Code (unless it is a first, minor offense, for which a teacher or administrator handles the violation themselves) that fall within its purview: including the giving or receiving of unauthorized academic aid, plagiarizing works, or lying to a teacher. The administration deals with illegal substance abuse on campus, and other legal matters. The Honor Board is comprised of the two Head Prefects and two Prefects from each grade in addition to two faculty members, two deans, and Father Young, representing each facet of the Harvard-Westlake community. The student body can be represented by their peers to both voice their opinions in the recommendation process and act as an advocate on behalf of a fellow student.
