They wore their decorated shirts to school on Friday. There was a rooter bus to the game. They were ready to end the Harvard-Westlake CIF title drought, but for the girls on the varsity field hockey team, it was not meant to be.

By halftime, Crespi’s hopes of an upset were dropping as fast as the temperature on that early Halloween evening. It was clear that the small Crespi team was overmatched. Just eight seconds before halftime, Brian Pingree ’07 let up the first goal. Up 8-1, backup keeper Max Lubin ’08 came in for the third quarter. Pingree was done for the day.

The plane was dark except for one light that shone dimly on a single seat. It was 12:37 early on Thursday morning. The flight was landing. The stewardess walked by Michael Vann ’07 seat and asked him if he needed any last minute beverages. He looked up and politely told her no, only to re-immerse himself in his work.

It was April two years ago, and the cheerleading season was coming to a close. The girls showed up expecting a normal practice, but instead Athletic Director Darlene Bible led them to the sports conference room overlooking Taper Gymnasium. The 16 girls were seated in the cramped room as Athletic Director Terry Barnum, Bible and cheerleading coach Ralinda Clayborn stood before them. Bible broke the news: because they wanted to take the cheerleading program in a “new direction,” Clayborn would be leaving.

It’s Friday afternoon and Chalmers West has turned red and white. Neat rows of tables line the room, each packed with a dozen or so raucous football players clad in full uniform.

Despite impressive performances from the all-Mission League tandem of Ally Young ’07 and Charlotte Abrams ’09, the girls’ golf team was unable to make the final four-team cut at this year’s CIF Central Team Divisionals on Oct. 29.

After one day of individual matches, all Wolverine competitors are still standing. Singles player Natasha Brown ’07 won her match in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0, while Ally Kalt ’09 had some more trouble with her singles matches.
