Use a laptop, save a tree

November 11, 2009

The administration has yet to implement one commonsense, environmentally-friendly policy: allowing students to type notes during class.

Let us prepare for the worst

October 15, 2009

On April 16, 2007, 32 students were killed in the Virginia Tech massacre. The shooter, a senior at the school, entered first a dorm, killing two people. He then went into a series of random classrooms and shot more than 174 rounds, overall killing 30 people and injuring another 17.

Step away from the Skittles

September 8, 2009

We are choosing the hard right not the easy wrong, we understand that just because we can doesn’t mean we should and that character not circumstance makes the person, but this has gone too far. This is the Pixie Stick that broke the camel’s back. We want our candy.

Fanatic about Fanatic Fest

October 15, 2009

We have always struggled with school spirit. The attendance at football games is sometimes pitiful and a lot of times it is easier to track down your peers at Starbucks than it is at a Fanatic Fest break. Yet this year, in the spirit of community, the Prefect Council, the head Fanatics and the Social Comittee worked together to create a memorable Fanatic Fest.

Waking up to a new schedule

September 8, 2009

On Wednesday, at least 800 alarm clocks sounded, prompting more than 800 Harvard-Westlake upper school students to roll out of bed, bleary-eyed and tired. For most of those students, it will be the first time in roughly three months that their alarm clock rang at such an early hour, or went off at all.

Experiment with the curriculum

May 27, 2009

It is indisputable that Harvard-Westlake has established itself as a highlyregarded

high school, and now that we have earned credibility in the academic

world, notably among college admissions officers, it is time to broaden our

intellectual horizons by taking academic risks.

Bridging the Campus Gap

May 27, 2009

Harvard-Westlake’s unique division of middle and high school into two

vaguely connected three-year chunks is accompanied by many advantages,

but sometimes it feels like students on the opposite campus might as well

attend an entirely different school.

Apply yourself

May 27, 2009

At the last junior class meeting of the year, while

stuffing our faces with doughnuts brought by my

dean, all the kids in my dean group stared up at

the projected image of the Common Application

— a maroon tinted questionnaire that if filled with the

right answers, letters and scores would ultimately grant us

acceptance to the colleges of our dreams.

Rethink proposed cell ban

April 29, 2009

Last Tuesday the Faculty Academic Committee passed a proposal to prohibit students from having cell phones on their person during school hours. If the proposal is signed, it would replace the current rule which states that cell phones can be used on campus when students are not in a school building.

School should allow Ditch Day

April 29, 2009

While Ditch Day for the senior class would ideally include some actual ditching, the truly vital aspect is simply a free day to reward the students for working so hard — and the administration should be more willing to support this.

Drop gender restrictions

March 25, 2009

In 1991, the year most of the seniors were born, Harvard and Westlake merged to become a coeducational school, and the leadership positions on campus were expanded to include one boy and one girl in order to represent both halves of the student body.

Move attendance online

March 25, 2009

It’s 2009, people. Tacking up multiple pieces of paper on a bulletin board is not only old school, but wasteful when everyone is talking about "going green." Students would all benefit enormously from an online resource for checking attendance.

Broaden English horizons

February 11, 2009

These are the numbers: eight for science, six for history and two for English. The stark contrast between the number of elective classes offered by the departments signals a problem in school curriculum: there are simply not enough avenues for students to explore an interest in English literature.

It's our turn, community

February 11, 2009

Although there have been community service events scheduled every weekend since winter break, fewer than 20 percent of the student body has completed their requirement. While the Community Council has worked tirelessly to provide many opportunities, students have not yet responded.

Thank you for paying attention

December 17, 2008

Last month, we asked the administration to reconsider Head of School Jeanne Huybrechts’ proposal to implement a number of changes to the academic schedule — namely, an August start date, the elimination of semester break and the move of midterms to mere days after winter break.
