The College Board implemented new security procedures that require students taking the SAT to complete a four-step identification check before they can be admitted to the test. The new protocol will be enforced starting at the Oct. 6 SAT next Saturday.
When registering for the SAT online, students must upload a photo for their admission ticket that complies with the College Board’s requirements. At the test center, students must present their printed admission ticket and an official photo ID. Both forms of identification must match the information in the test center’s roster and the appearance of the student.
“Even if you are a Harvard-Westlake student and your dean is right there at the registration table, College Board will not allow us to admit you to the test without the four-way ID verification,” the Upper School deans said in an email to students about new testing procedures.
In addition to the new identification system, there are no longer standby or walk-in options for taking the SAT. On the day of the test, students cannot change their test center, their test date, or switch from the SAT reasoning test to the SAT II subject test.
The College Board announced the new protocols in March after a SAT cheating ring was discovered in Long Island last September.

The Prefect Council kicked off its Monthly Meals events with cheese rolls, apple strudel and chicken empanadas from Porto's Bakery this Monday, Oct. 1. In past years, food from nearby restaurants has been sold only on special occasions. With the institution of Monthly Meals, the Council aims to make off-campus food options a regular occurrence.
Head Prefect Katie Lim ’13 said students have always lobbied for an event like this one, but that Monthly Meals was fellow Head Prefect Michael Wagmeister's '13 “brainchild.”
“We're expecting the food to go quickly, because in the past it has been the most successful food sold at school,” Senior Prefect Mikaila Mitchell '13 said.
Food was sold during break on Monday and throughout the rest of the day. Students had to pay in cash to the Porto's sale, as all Monthly Meals events will not take Harvard-Westlake IDs. One food item was $3, and two items sold for $5.
"Not only has the student body asked for something like this, but, I mean, who doesn't love food?" Lim said.
Underclassmen, who are not permitted to leave campus during school hours, welcome the off-campus options.
“Since I just started driving, I think this will really help me find good food places nearby,” Greg Lehrhoff ’14 said.

These alumni will present their experiences in the industries of finance, healthcare, law, real estate, nonprofit, hospitality, entertainment and education.
High school students will also be able to learn more about the HW Job Board, which allows alumni to find or offer jobs within the Harvard-Westlake network. The first of its kind, the event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m, and additional industries and panelists may be added.

Applications to be a peer tutor are due Sept. 24 either in Director of Student Affairs Jordan Church's office or at the peer tutoring table at Activities Fair.
Peer tutoring gives upperclassmen a chance to tutor students in grades below them in subjects they feel comfortable tutoring in. Students also need to provide a teacher recommendation form which need to have been given to their teacher of choice on Sept. 21.
“People should sign up to be peer tutors because it's a great way to give back to the HW community. As a tutor you meet new members of the community, become more patient, and get a better understanding of a subject by explaining it to others. There's a great deal of satisfaction for the tutor when he/she sees his/her tutee improve in class,” said peer tutor coordinator Annie Wasserman ’13.

Prefect Council hosted its annual activities fair Monday, Sept. 24 during activities period. Club members set up tables on the quad with snacks and posters and informed students about their group. Students were able to explore these club options and sign up for the ones they were interested in.
According to Head Prefect Katie Lim '13 there were a "record breaking" total of 58 clubs that participated in the fair ranging from Paintball Club and the Gay-Straight Alliance to Junior Classical League and Dungeons and Dragons Club. KHWS played music throughout the entire event and, as usual, the Fanatics sold 2012-2013 Fanatics t-shirts that quickly sold-out.
"As cheesy as it is, it's a real community event." Lim said. "The free food and music definitely helps."
