Chronicle, Big Red win national honors

The 2008-2009 Chronicle, edited by Lucy Jackson '09 and Andrew Lee '09 won the National Scholastic Press Association's National Pacemaker Award Saturday, and the November 2009 edition won first place in Best of Show at the convention in Washington, D.C.

Habitat chapter sets world record

A team of Harvard-Westlake students helped surpass a world record by breaking ground on 24 houses in two minutes at the Habitat for Humanity "The American Dream" 5K Walk on Saturday Oct. 10. The event was documented by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Illness causes increase in student absences

Nearly 20 percent of the upper school student body was absent on Friday, Oct. 9. Some were absent because of recruiting trips or other commitments, but a significant number of the students called in sick with the flu.

The Chronicle has been named a finalist for the National Pacemaker, high school journalism's highest award. Winners will be announced Nov. 14 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Jamie Chang '13 and Sophie Turner '12, are finalists in the Picture of the Year contest for photos published in last spring's Tenth Muse middle school literary magazine.

Coldwater reopened in time for Ring Ceremony

A water main break on Coldwater Canyon near the upper school's entrance that closed the thoroughfare down to traffic  the whole first week of school was repaired Saturday. Guests at Sunday afternoon's Senior Ceremony should have no problems getting to the upper school campus.

Ali Riley '06 makes it 3 alum Olympians

Ali Riley ’06 will play midfield for the New Zealand national women’s soccer team in the squad’s first Olympic appearance ever next month in Beijing.

Riley is one of three alumni competing in the Beijing games beginning Aug. 8, along with Dara Torres and Peter Hudnut, who will both play for the United States. Torres is a swimmer and Hudnut a water polo player.

McCourt drafted by Boston Red Sox

Valedictorian Oreman to represent US in Olympiad

Josh Oreman ’09, who will give the valedictory at graduation June 5, will represent the United States at the International Physics Olympiad in Merida, Mexico.

Physics teacher John Feulner was notified today that Oreman, who won a Gold Medal in last year's Olympiad, was chosen as one of five to represent the United States.
