Downey eliminates Wolverines in marathon game

The baseball team lost 3-2 in an epic battle to Downey High School Tuesday night. The game lasted 20 innings and seven and a half hours, making it the longest playoff game in CIF Southern Section History. It came down to the bottom of the 20th inning, when Jack LaZebnik ’09 walked in the winning run for Downey. He pitched 4 and two-thirds innings, only allowing that one run.

Eric Schultz ’10 pitched 10 scoreless innings. His pitch count was really high, fatiguing the senior.

“I had to dig deep to make a pitch,” he said.

Legendary manager Tommy Lasorda was in attendance and at one point, FOX 11 news came to investigate the game. The start time was 3:15 p.m., but the game ended at 10:53 p.m.
